Working with bright, full-on sunshine during a photo session is probably one of the most difficult aspects of photography. The location can be gorgeous but if the sun’s too strong, it can keep you busy searching for the best spot. Which is why it’s great to have a laid-back family who easily takes direction.
The family session below was photographed at Biltmore Lake – a gorgeous, planned community with a 62-acre lake in Candler, North Carolina. Dad was our realtor when we moved here the summer of 2013. He made the move an easy one. Super friendly. Fun. Easy going. And thankfully, so was the rest of the family during the shoot. Mom was gorgeous and big brothers were so sweet to their new little sis. Now if only the sun had cooperated.
We met at what I assumed was the perfect time of day with the sun slowly sinking in the west. Unfortunately, I didn’t consider the lake and just how strong the sun would continue to shine as it set. We started in a few wide-open spots but the sun was determined to outshine us. A few spots later, with a building or tree blocking the light, we settled in to a fun session. And finally, FINALLY, the sun slipped away and left us with that beautiful golden glow.
So what’s the lesson here? Find shade and adjust your camera settings accordingly. Avoid the auto setting because the sun will throw you off. And if you can, make sure you have a super nice family to work with. It makes all things run that much smoother. Thanks, Turners!
