One of the highlights of my summer is taking a carload of boys to Lake Lure for a day of swimming, sliding and water ballooning. We made the short trip yesterday (just 26 miles from Asheville) for our third annual outing to this postcard-ready town nestled in the mountains.
Lake Lure’s claim to fame is serving as one of the filming locations for the movie Dirty Dancing. (The first Dirty Dancing. The original Dirty Dancing. Not the pathetic remake from earlier this year.) The 30th annual Dirty Dancing Festival in Lake Lure is even taking place as I type! And while we could have waited a day to go, I doubt the boys would be impressed by Shag lessons or the Lake Lift Competition. Oh, Swayze!
But back to our day!
For the third year, I made the trip with six, yes, SIX boys/teens/miniature men packed in my car. A quick side note…moms with toddlers, I know you shed a tear wondering when your sweet, little munchkin will turn into a supposed crazed tween/teen but I promise, PROMISE, it’s better than you think. It’s actually fun hanging with this crew.
The teens listened to music on their phones on the ride there and get this “children of the 70s and 80s”…it’s OUR music! They think OUR music is cool! Of course I couldn’t utter this out loud for fear of ruining the fun but I did quietly mouth the words to ACDC’s Shook Me All Night Long. Then I got a little gutsy and sang out loud to Devil Went Down to Georgia in a pathetic attempt to impress them but instead humiliated my teen son who glared at me from the front seat. Lesson learned.
Once we got there, the teens went one way and the tweens went the other. There was a brief encounter in the lake when tweens were thrown by teens but it was all in good fun. I loved watching my little guy and his buddy look up to the “big boys” in awe.
The day was fun, the weather was perfect, and the crew played hard. We ended the day like we usually do – getting ice cream at the Village Scoop before making the trip back to Asheville.
So here’s a little peek at our Lake Lure day. Until next summer…
