Bubbles and Boo-Hoos (Asheville family photography)

What I love about photography is learning something new – a new technique, a new way to work with light, a new pose. But the session featured below taught me something not found in books or on-line articles. It gave me insight far beyond anything the most prestigious universities could share. What is this ground-breaking wisdom you ask? Here goes…

“Never, EVER, under any circumstances, bring out the bubbles too soon in a session! Ever! Just don’t do it.”

Why you ask?

This is why.

Sweet baby boy did not want to hand over the bubbles for regular photos and simply wanted to be left alone dipping the long, gooey wand in the gigantic blue bottle over and over and OVER again. I get it. It’s fun. And it was my fault for pulling it out too soon. Which is why I felt awful when this happened.

But as toddler tantrums go, it ran its course and he calmed down with the help of an orange, frozen fruit pop. (Another piece of photographer wisdom – when in need, bring out the icy fruit pops. And… you’re welcome.)

Other than that small snafu, the session went beautifully. The grandparents were surrounded by their two children, five gorgeous grandchildren, and a pile of friendly, family pets. The kids ran and played and everyone had fun.

So please keep looking to see the smiling images after the Bubble Boo-Hoos were over. Lesson learned!
